Worth every dime! I forgot how much we paid, but it was worth it. This property made us not want to leave home a couple of days. It’s tastefully decorated, well appointed, full of amenities, and peaceful. We were pleasantly surprised with the endless details, privacy and comfort. I’m an OCD type and I had zero issues. Even walked around with no shoes, left my suitcase open, and felt comfy laying on the sofa. That’s huge for me. Book this place. You won’t regret it!

We really enjoyed our stay at this unique property. We loved just sitting and looking out at the backyard which is like a tropical forest with paths available for walking, yet the property is in a neighborhood only 10 min from Hilo. The beds were very comfortable and the kitchen is well appointed. The massage chair was enjoyed by all after hiking at the national park. This property is a great blend of nature and high tech with remote controlled ceiling fans and lighting in every room, high tech toilets and modern appliances. There is no air conditioning, and it was a bit hot in the afternoons, but it cooled off at night for sleeping. Check in/out was easy with the door code. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. The only negative we noticed was light filtering blinds in the main bedroom, which could be a problem for some who need the room darker in the morning hours. Also, coqui frogs sing at night (I think across most of the island). Could be white noise for some but we used our earplugs to sleep.

The lava retreat was the best place we have ever stayed! The host have thought of absolutely everything one could ever need. Going inside the house you see the back area which is not to disappoint and even better the more you explore! Comfortable beds, rooms, great sitting areas, stocked kitchen! Just 6 minutes to Hilo but feels a world away.. score 20/10 and we will absolutely return

There are so many things to love about this home. Never have I ever loved a rental so much that I couldn't wait to get home after a day of touring. Every single detail is pure perfection. Heated toilet seats and towel bars! A massage chair! Several walls of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a completely private rainforest with paths to explore. The outdoor double shower made of lava rock (what a treat!). Hot tub was most welcome after a long day of hiking on lava at Volcanoes National Park. Even the kitchen had high-end coffee-makers and gadgets to make you feel like you are royalty. We had breakfast on the lanai every morning, and sat out there again every evening before bed as we reflected on our day.Hilo is a hidden gem that many tourists miss. Since it is a rainforest, there are lots of waterfalls, and it is very easy to tour the volcano, drive the Upper Road to Waimea, and take the Red Road (Rte 137) to Isaac Hale State Park where the lava literally crosses the road. Easily accessible to the main strip in Hilo with shopping and the Pacific Tsunami Museum. And so much more. The spaciousness and luxurious amenities of this home create such a relaxed atmosphere that you just want to soak it in and savor every minute. Absolutely loved listening to the rain and the frogs and wildlife while drifting off to sleep. Didn’t need our sound machine here! I have already decreed to my husband that future trips to any Hawaiian island will require a quick stop in Hilo to relax at Lava Rock Retreat for a few days before heading back home to reality. If you are on the fence about renting here, do it. You’ll be glad you did.

Amazing place! I rented this place sort of last-minute as some of my best friends were visiting from the mainland. I live on the west side of the island and we were looking to do a getaway with my friends to be closer to Volcano. We really love staying at particularly whimsical Airbnbs, and we really wanted one with a hot tub if possible. When we found this place on Airbnb, it had a 3-night minimum stay, but when I reached out to the hosts through their website, they were kind enough to make a special exception for us as we could only stay 2 nights. The place had EVERYTHING. You will want for nothing. Organic spices, a fully stocked kitchen, multiple coffee makers, a rice cooker, literally anything you could want. All the toilets were on a system where you walk in and the lid lifts and there are heated seats and bidets (we didn't know about this but it was an unexpected very fancy luxury). All the towels are on towel warmers. The place is so modern and Japendi at the same time. There are tiki torch lit pathways through the jungle in the backyard that make for amazing moonlit night walks and the hot tub and outdoor showers are second-to-none. The beds are incredibly comfortable and we especially loved eating out the back lava rock lanai (original lava rock that has been preserved for effect). We also loved the well-lit lights that you can turn on to illuminate the jungle outside as you sit in the massive massage chair and have a full-body massage experience. Overall, this may have been the nicest Airbnb I have ever stayed in (and I have stayed in probably around 100 over the past decade of my life). It is private and the neighbors are very friendly but do not invade your space. The back yard is completely separated and private. I would totally come back here if you want a whimsical, luxury, comfortable, biophilic stay close to Hilo & Volcano side. Mahalo!

We had a fantastic stay at the Lava Rock Retreat. The house was exactly what we expected and was a nice relaxing getaway after the hustle and bustle of Honolulu.
The backyard and grounds were peaceful and we loved enjoying our morning coffee on the lanai. Thank you for sharing your amazing home with us.

My husband surprised me with this home. He didn't want me to know anything about it until we got there. We got there after dark and when we walked in it was the most fantastic surprise! The home was a dream! Windows everywhere lining the most gorgeous landscaping. The outside lighting lit the outside up and made you feel like you were in a Jurassic Park movie. The whole entire house was set up with so much love and care. All the little details really made it charming and special! I felt like I was in the middle of the rainforest while being in the comfort of a warm cozy house. The whole experience exceeded expectations! The hot tub was a fun experience amongst the landscaping and the chirping of the coqui frogs. Everything about this house was wonderful! Cozy blankets, air conditioning, heated towel warmers, fun appliances, and everything else! We absolutely loved it and will definitely want to stay there again! Best experience ever and it's so close to everything you want to see. We were greeted with such kindness! It is hands down a memorable experience.

This place is absolutely amazing and exceeded our expectations, which unfortunately seems more rare in the post Covid world. It has everything and then some when it comes to amenities and creature comforts.
The floor to ceiling windows that look out onto your private jungle is as stunning in person as anticipated, and they have small walking trails that are all yours to enjoy.
It’s a tech savvy house with Alexa, phone chargers, Spotify channel, heated towel racks and heated bidet toilets. Luxury!
The beds were super comfy, with the primary being nice and firm, and they provided soft robes. I’m pretty picky about my sleeping conditions and I slept so well here.
That said, I enjoyed the coqui frogs and all the animal noises; some may not.
The hot tub and outdoor showers were used everyday, as well as the amazing massage chair. Great location in a beautiful neighborhood.
To note a few things some may not love as much:
The neighbors pups were a bit vocal, sometimes very early in the morning, much like the Kauai roosters, and the rain can be loud on the metal roof. Nothing the owners can do, but wanted to mention for others if they need earplugs.
Also, the heated towel racks are great, but if you have little ones, may want to look out for the one in the kitchen that is pretty low as they can be quite hot.
We honestly didn’t want to leave for the Hilton on the Kona side! I have a feeling we will miss the home very much. And that is exactly how it felt; like home.

This home is one of the most beautiful homes I’ve ever seen! Words and photos barely do it justice. The floor-to-ceiling wall of windows that looks out over the lush jungle took my breath away. AND all those windows slide open (with sturdy screens behind them) to make you feel like you are living in the landscape. Many of the walls are faced with natural lava rock, which enhances that feeling. The super cool lighting and smart home features play so nicely against the nature-forward aspects of the home. It’s like nothing I’ve seen in a vacation rental before - and I’ve stayed in a lot of them. Other highlights include the huuuuuuuge hot tub and the chef’s kitchen. Cooking is one of my passions and this kitchen had everything I needed and so much more. The beds - and all the furnishings - are super comfy. The house feels very secluded, but it’s only a few minutes from downtown Hilo.We had a couple minor questions, but our on-island contact answered them quickly. I guess it’s a brand new rental so I was lucky enough to get in at the beginning. Book it now because I’m sure it will be full up soon! I wanted to stay here forever.
