The Wooden Gem is a magical tiny hut custom-built by fine furniture makers (that's us) using local woods. A true work of art, it's nestled in the native forest of Kaloko Mauka. At a cool 2200 ft elevation, we're just 10 minutes from town, airport, and beaches, but it feels like you've been transported to another world.
Perfectly private and especially quiet, enjoy dark-sky stargazing while soaking in a freestanding tub fit for two, or nestle into the queen bed to relax with a book or a show.
The space
Newly built, we designed The Wooden Gem based on traditional Shepard's Huts from the UK with a Hawai'i twist. At 18' long and 8'6" wide (double that with the lanai), every detail has been thought through and artfully constructed to create a sanctuary that is both beautiful and functional.
You'll find local hardwoods and jewel-toned touches showcased throughout, a fully functional kitchen, a BBQ, and an outdoor (but under cover) soaking tub and copper rainshower that is the stuff of dreams.
Situated on a 3.25-acre property on the cool slopes of Hualalai, we are above the heat but close to it all—beaches, shopping, airport, hiking. The neighborhood is quiet and safe — rural living close to town. There is a great hiking trail just up the road, coffee tours and a cloud forest sanctuary you can tour. It does get chilly here at night, especially during the winter (think 50's F) so bring a sweatshirt.
Guest Access
You have your own entry gate and drive. The gate opens with a keypad, and parking is just a few yards from the front steps.
The Wooden Gem shares the same property as our main residence. The houses are located about 200' apart but are situated so that your stay is completely private. Once you enter this haven, it's just you and the trees.
Your zone is from the edge of the gravel and the house to the fence. It's quite clear, but we're here if you have any questions.
Interaction with guests
My husband, Noah, and I live on the property and are happy to answer questions between 8 am and 8 pm unless it's an emergency; then come and knock on our door!
While this is a self-check-in stay, I'm happy to meet you, answer any questions you have, and share my knowledge about our beloved island.
You'll be able to reach me through VRBO and phone.
Other Things to Note
We have two beautiful dogs, Honi and Paka, who have the run of the place. They're very, very sweet, and it's likely they'll come to say hi: anything for some pets. They're well-fed; don't let them tell you otherwise. We also have a cat, Elbie, who makes himself scarce, spending his days on the other side of the fence so it's likely you'll never see him.
If you cannot tolerate dogs, this is probably not the best place for you.
Bio-Degradable Soaps & Food Scraps
We've tried to be as low impact on the area as possible so all of the water from the sinks and shower runs into the dirt to water the plants. As such, if you're not averse, we ask you to use the provided biodegradable soaps, and please don't put food scraps down the sink, as they'll just end up in your yard or stuck in the filter pipe.
Whole Home Water Filtration
The entire house has filtered water, so it's perfectly fine to drink from the tap—we live on an island, so single-use plastic bottles don't ever leave—and it's heaven on your skin.
Children
We love kids, but this stay is definitely not ...
