The only Frank Lloyd Wright home built in Hawaii is now available for your next vacation. This 3 bedroom, 3.5 bathroom architecturally significant residence will comfortably accommodate a family in a setting that is truly one-of-a-kind. Features of the home include a complete kitchen with upgraded appliances, an expansive living area (with a fireplace) and an outdoor lava-rock hot tub overlooking a seasonal stream and breathtaking mountain views. The bedrooms are located upstairs and float over the main level of the house. The master bedroom has superior views with a private bathroom, walk-in closet and private outdoor balcony. The second bedroom has its own private bathroom with a queen size bed. The third bedroom has two twin beds and the fourth bedroom is currently being used as an office and/or playroom. There is a grass yard in front of the home that is shaded in the morning, making for the perfect space to have an outdoor breakfast or to practice yoga.
This architectural gem was constructed on a 3-acre gated property between the Kohala Coast and the town of Waimea. This spectacular residence is perched over the Waiaka stream with ocean views and a perfect panoramic view of three of the Big Island's awe-inspiring volcanoes (Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Hualalai). Throughout the landscaped property guests will find secluded seating areas, a hammock and a small soccer field. Unique to this FLW home, guests are only a short 10 minute drive to beautiful white sand beaches, world class resorts and plentiful golf courses on the Kohala Coast. Also within a short drive is the country town of Waimea where bountiful farmers markets will supply you with all the fresh locally-grown ingredients you will need to make memorable meals during your stay.
HISTORY OF HOME:
Completed in 1995 the home was commissioned by Sanderson Sims who partnered with Taliesin Associated Architects, John Rattenbury and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation to bring the unbuilt plan to life. Originally conceived for the Cornwell Family in Pennsylvania in 1954, the 3,700 sq. foot passive solar hemicycle home embodies FLW's principles of organic architecture in which the structure blends harmoniously with the natural landscape. A series of towering glass doors topped with windows reveals floor to ceiling views along the entire span of the home. The second floor appears to float over the expansive curved main living area and is in fact suspended from the beams in the hidden steel frame circumnavigating the home.
The home has rounded walls made of coral aggregate block from Oahu, FLW's signature Cherokee-red concrete floors, and is built into a hill offering indoor/outdoor living that is sheltered from the consistent trade winds. It is furnished with licensed reproductions of original FLW-designed furniture including his Barrel chairs, Origami chairs from 1949, and Taliesin floor lamps. The home has extensive built-in seating per the FLW design, as well as custom built furniture to integrate with the home's round walls. A series of opaque skylights bring natural light into the home and warm lighting behind opaque glass illuminates the house at night.

This was our 15th FLW rental, and it certainly did not disappoint. We enjoyed the remote feel of the location, while we also appreciated that it was within easy driving distance of everything we wanted to do. We also appreciated how well appointed the kitchen was—making it easy for us to cook dinner at “home” every day. We had plenty of space, and enjoyed evenings in the hot tub.
We highly recommend this property and hope to be able to return one day.

I have been a Frank Lloyd Wright fan for years ,so to spend some time in one of his places was thrilling! My daughter,son-in-law and one of their college classmates (all Texas Tech architects) really enjoyed their visit and experience. The owners have done an excellent job of maintaining the spirit and integrity of the place. It was a memorable stay to say the least.

My graduation from architecture school was a long time ago, and even though I changed careers after a short time working in the field, I held on to my love of architecture. I have visited other FLW buildings over the years, but never dreamed that I would get a chance to stay in one of his designs even for a short time. This house wasn’t built during his lifetime and some might find that less desirable, but take it from me, it is still a sublime experience. There were six of us staying in the house, four adults, a 12yo and a 14yo; so we maxed out the accommodations. Everyone commented on the fact that it just felt special… even the non-architecture geeks. The house is very well outfitted and the grounds are beautiful. It seemed much more like a family house than a vacation rental. The location is near Waimea, which we really liked. Waimea is not a hotbed of tourist activity and felt like a place for locals. That said, we felt welcome everywhere we went. The property is 10 minutes or so away from resorts and beaches; convenient but not part of the hubbub. The house has no A/C, but sits at an altitude of about 1800’, so even during the summer it is comfortable. We stayed the third week of June and the temperatures were upper 70’s for highs with lows of around 60°. It felt perfect. The house has a good view of the coastline and the mountains. From the photos on VRBO, I wasn’t sure of the coastal views, but they were great. We loved it and are already planning our return!

Our group of five thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Frank Lloyd Wright house near Waimea — what a treat to spend several days living in a space designed by the master instead of just visiting a FLW house or museum for a couple hours. So much fun detail to absorb and what a wonderful view out over the valley both day and night — turn out all the lights and the stars just glow with beautiful framing by the crescent roof. It’s a magical spot.
South Kohala were excellent hosts as well — very responsive to my emails, friendly and helpful at all times, and the check-in and check-out processes were easy and quick.
I highly recommend this experience and hope to return someday.

This house is the real deal. We loved our stay, and woke up every morning to take photos of the sunrise over Mauna Kea. Amazing.
