The front yard is steps away from one of the world’s most beautiful sandy beaches. There is great snorkeling, swimming, boogie boarding right in front of the cottage, depending on the swell, of coarse. Surfers can paddle out to the break from the front yard. This is also a perfect place to relax and just enjoy the ocean views. Besides other great views there are SPECTACULAR sunsets just about every evening. There are also early morning “full moon sets”, and occasional rainbows out over the ocean. (Makaha is on the dry side of the island). Watch dolphins, sea turtles and spouting whales from the front yard. This is truly a gorgeous one-of-a kind place!
The attached cottage is clean with off-white tile throughout. There are two queen beds; one in the main studio and another in a screened porch sitting/sleeping room. Visitors can hear the ocean lapping on the sand from both rooms. A bathroom with a shower/bath tub connects the rooms from a patio. The street-side patio is very private and screened in. The second patio faces the shared front yard and ocean. There are tables and chairs on both patios as well as in the main studio. There is also a gas barbeque on the ocean side patio. Street side patio is covered.
The kitchen is fully equipped with dishes and pans. There is a large refrigerator, a two burner propane gas stove, microwave, toaster, toaster oven, blender, coffee grinder and coffee maker. Everything one needs, but not fancy. If you want hotel-style air conditioning, fresh towels and linens everyday, and your bed turned down the cottage is not the place for you.
Located one hours drive from Honolulu/Waikiki/North Shore, Makaha is close enough for day trips, but far enough away to enjoy a more natural, peaceful and casual Hawaii far away from the typical tourist hustle and bustle.
Makaha is known as the jewel of the Leeward Coast. A visitor can enjoy an authentic island style vacation
away from the crowds and hub bub of Waikiki. Makaha is famous for it’s winter surfing and was home to one of the early big wave surfing contests; the Makaha International Surfing Contest that was started the early 50s. Because of the 'winter' north swell the beach sand shifts dramatically from one end of the beach to the other. During the months of September/October to May /June (this varies depending on the direction of the swell) there is a large sand beach in front of the house. During the summer months visitors have to walk down toward the point several lots for the sand beach.
There are also diving caves, turtles, dolphins, whales and spectacular sunsets. There is a golf course minutes away as well as the harbor where a visitor can take dolphin and whale watch excursions, and deep sea fishing charters are also available. Centuries ago Makaha Valley was home to a group of Hawaiians (and their ancestors the menehune) who lived solely from farming and fishing. There is a ceremonial lava rock structure (He'iau) that has been restored by the Bishop Museum and is interesting to visit. Other amenities are the majestic Wai'anae Mountains
It is an uncrowded area and usually always has a lovely breeze coming down the valley.
Most of the proceeds from this rental go to take care of my cat sanctuary located in Honolulu where I live

Property was as described. No frills, but has what you need for your stay. We were out and about all day during our stay so it was perfect. View from backyard is outstanding and hearing the waves all night was amazing. You do have to go through a bunch of homeless spots on your drive in and avoid those beaches, but the beach right by the house was good. Sister lives on property and was very friendly and helpful and it was nice knowing others were around.

Walk from the back door directly onto beautiful Makaha Beach, or watch the sunset from the patio, or take in the stunning night sky, or fall asleep to the sounds of the crashing waves. This quaint little bungalow has charm, location and the potential for life-long Hawaiian memories.

Great location on the beach. Not so great area of the island. Property was HOT during the day (May/June) where it was a bit unbearable to stay inside, especially in the bedroom with direct sunlight. I think it sits a bit lower and the hedges impede the breeze. Overall, the location was amazing; host was really, really good (sister lives next door, so felt a bit safer); beach and rocks were gorgeous, and not as crowded as other beaches we visited. Great spot to watch sunsets for a mother/daughter trip.

Loved the place. My only complaint is that there was no blanket.

If you want to be secluded with a beautiful sunset everyday, this is the place. The owners are next door to help with any needs. Definitely need a vehicle; North Shore is about an hour away, Ko Olina is 30 mins, and the Outlets are about 35 mins (a must if you want Malasadas)! The beach is right outside the backdoor and it’s just you and the water. A great little spot, tucked away in Makaha!

Loved being right on the beach. Great hike/walk about a 15 minute drive at the end of the road to a wildlife sanctuary and along the rocky edge of the ocean. Easy to get to the North Shore. Basic accommodations, but worked for us. My only complaint is the road noice at night when we were trying to sleep. I live in a very quiet neighborhood, so I am not used to road noise. Other than that, we really enjoyed out stay.

The location is amazing. It felt like having a private beach most days, with an amazing backdrop of the Makaha Valley and ridges. The accommodations are simple yet sufficient. We would definitely stay again. Thank you!

This suited our needs perfectly. We wanted something away from the Honolulu-Wiakiki crowds and resort areas, and on the west side. All in all, this place was our our own private, simple resort. We stayed in March 2024.
The beach front is what "makes" the house, and it really is just steps away. It is just down from Makaha beach, but we really didn't get any overflow of people from the main beach area -- only a a very few people walking by. There are a couple of trees that provide a little shade on the beach until about 1130 AM. The beach faces west, so you have potential for some great sunsets while you grill or hang out on the patio.
The "house" itself is really a built on addition to the adjoining house, and you share a wall and back yard. But this is no problem at all -- very nice and accomodating people live in the house. There's no AC and lots of screens, so you get a good ocean breeze. With open windows you'll get a little road/dog noise too, but we were so tired by the end of the day, it didn't bother us at all. The ocean waves do drown out alot and help things fade together as just backbround noise.
Everything was "just what you needed": beech chairs, snorkle gear, a grill on the patio, and comfortable beds. The clothes washer is also a big plus.
The house is maybe 10 minutes from a couple of grocery stores. A drug store is even closer. It took us about 35-40 minutes to get to the H1-H2 interchange area near Honolulu. But just go to Haleiwa instead!

If you’re looking for direct beach access that won’t break the bank, and are willing to compromise on location and upscale furnishings, this is the place. It has an authentic beach vibe, well appointed kitchen, comfortable day bed and regular bed, with a large library, kitchen table, in a spacious cottage. Downside is there is no AC but we were able to stay comfortable with the fans and ocean dips/cool showers. We found it to be quiet and fairly private, and although you share the beach access with the main house and the carport, we rarely saw or heard anyone else. Our one comment is that it would have been nice to be able to lock the screen door from the inside to feel more secure when sleeping in the porch area.

We had a wonderful 10 days at this cute cottage. Not very many dining choices on the west side so we cooked many great meals. Fully stocked kitchen. No oven but we never needed it. Does have a large toaster oven. The bed was very comfortable with plenty of pillows. They had boogie boards, umbrella and snorkeling equipment. Like the ad reads, this is not for people who need turn down service with a mint on the pillow. Gloria, who lives in the main house was wonderful and very knowledgeable about the area. Do your research though. This side of the island is not for everybody. Looking forward to going back.

We stayed for 10 days and 9 nights. We got there Christmas Day and all was well. We did have an issue with our toilet but it was fixed within 10 minutes of it being mentioned to Vicky!
Vicky and Gloria (cottage neighbor/ Vickys sister) are both very welcoming! The cottage was exactly what was listed!
The only issue we had was there is no curtains in the room or kitchen. It was not an issue the first few nights but then, roadwork started and the workers placed their light in a spot where it directly goes into the cottage.
The location of the cottage can be a bit noisy for someone not used to the busy city noise because essentially you are directly off the street. In our experience, the waves canceled the street noise for us.
The only thing I felt was missing was a body mirror to check you OOTD. Otherwise the cottage had everything you might possibly need or think of.
Great Location to explore local spots because you are ways from most tourist locations.
