Holualoa does have coqui frogs that chirp at night, especially when it rains. There may also be noise from roosters, chickens in the distance and cattle when they are down near the house.
You'll need a car to get around while you are here. Holualoa Village is only minutes away, it is about 15 minutes to Kailua-Kona town. Some of our favorite beaches are magic Sands (15 minutes away), Honls, Kamakahonu Bay(in front of the Marriott King Kamehameha Hotel), Kekahakai STte Park (Mahaiula's), Kua Bay (Maniniowale Bay), Hapuna Beach to name a few. Snorkeling at Kahalu'u Beach, Kealakekua Bay and Honaunau Bay. Deep sea fishing, diving and night charters start from Honokohau Harbor. Scenic Valleys in Kohala and along the Hamakua Coast. Waterfalls on the East side of the island.A day trip south takes you to Punaluu Black Sands Beach, the cliffs off South Point and Green Sands Beach (Mahana Bay). Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa are accessible for those seeking seasonal Hawaiian snow or a glimps of the stars. So many adventure, too little time to truly enjoy all our island has to offer.

We booked this as a 1 night stay for our trip home out of Kona. It’s clean/comfy and has a nice little lanai where we enjoyed a cold drink as the sunset over the ocean on our last night in Hawaii. It’s a perfect spot for a couple with room for a +1 if needed.

We absolutely loved our stay at the charming Holualoa country home. The lanai boasts a stunning view of the ocean and sunset. While downtown Kona was sweltering in the heat, it was nice and cool on the mountain. I miss hearing the coqui frogs at night! The hosts leave lots of beach gear for your use - beach chairs, an umbrella, a boogie board, snorkels, a cooler, beach towels, etc., which is incredibly nice for those of us who fly in! I would not recommend a low-setting car for the drive up the mountain, though. You'll bottom out on some of the potholes.

I knew I wanted to be away from the Kona area and have always loved the Holualoa laid back vibe. Great view from the lanai as I worked on my newsletter. Enjoyed the sunsets tremendously. No need for airconditioning as a leaving the windows slightly open works really well and if it get warmer or if you are warm from having been on a hike the ceiling fan at low speed in both the living room and bedroom work great. We had everything we could need and really enjoyed the coqui frogs serenading us as we went to bed. There is wonderful breakfast and coffee close by without having to go into Kona. It was loads of fun driving through the upper back roads - curvy and so lush and green. Kona has gotten ridiculous in collecting expensive parking fees especially close to the cruise terminal and so will only head to businesses that have free parking which is further away from the cruise terminal. Will stay again when are back on the west coast of the Big Island. Thank you very much for a lovely stay.

BAD: The toaster did not work very well. The dish rack was rusted. The shower mat was gross. The bathroom floor needed to be cleaned. There were some ants in the microwave stand. I re-cleaned the shower as it was not to my standards, but it was not overly bad. I was glad there were cleaning products underneath the sink. The hill to drive up was a bit of a climb. Better signage for the house would be good. GOOD: The view was awesome. The grounds were great. The bed was very comfortable as were the pillows. The water pressure was good as well as the drain in the shower (I hate standing water). Lots of little treats (snacks n coffee). Overall I would recommend but if you are picky it might not be for you.

Perfect for the two of us, this cottage (a diplex with a garage between the untis) is in the coffee countryside above Kailua Kona. Had everything we needed for our stay. Owner was terrific and even helped us when we had two flight cancellations for our return home. TBH, the first time you do the steep driveway you may think “ are you kidding me?” But after that first up and down you are a pro. Would stay there again!

One must read reviews and look at the map to know this is a rural place that on your first trip in seems a long way out, but then on subsequent trips the drive is also enchanting. Lori's good directions are definitely needed.
The other side of the carport is a house with long term renters and they are very nice and quiet-(If you see them at all)
The place is very very clean and seems newer. Great bed and sheets.
The high up view is great and we often just moved the comfy chairs to the side in the shade and enjoyed the view or read.
We would give this 5 stars but for something entirely out of owner's control. (This unless the owners-who seem to have neighborhood influence- "explained" things to some neighbors)
Apparently every once in a while a neighbor 100 yards away up the hill likes to demonstrate that their subwoofer can rattle windows for 1000 yards. Everybody has had "that" car role up next to them and the bass drives ya nuts. Well, these type of people have to live somewhere!
OK, with that part over with, if you have a rural bone in your body, one must buy some carrots for both the horses. (owner says ok). Safeway has a big bag of them. Both horses mean a darker mare on the other side of the fence--- to the side and below. And the gelding, in the picture, uphill. The mare (Poloni) seems a bit older so we cut the carrots smaller for her. Chief is a gluten so the pieces can be bigger. We lifted the electric fence and crawled under so as not to take the chance of them reaching too far over and getting zapped. Just use an open hand-- they are so gentle.
