This five-bedroom/three-bath home sits on five acres of land in the Kohala Estates. We specifically designed and built the house as a family vacation gathering spot. Its high ceilings and 760 square feet of windows make it particularly light and airy. Tradewinds and 13 ceiling fans help to keep it cool. The kitchen and the master bedroom have 180-degree ocean views plus the sweep of the Kohala Mountains, Maunakea, Hualalai, Mauna Loa, and nearly the entire Kona-Kohala Coast.
From the lanai, guests can watch a sprinkling of fishing boats, tour boats, military vessels, and pleasure boats. Several times a day a tug towing a barge pulls in and out of nearby Kawaihae Harbor. With good luck and timing, guests can spot Hawaiian spinner dolphins, humpback whales, and the occasional green flash. We can't guarantee blue skies and no mosquitoes; but odds are better here than anywhere else in the central Pacific. The house sits in the rain shadow of the Kohala Mountains, and annual rainfall totals are typically in the single digits!
We have tried to make our house a 'home away from home' for our guests. It is attractive and comfortable without being so fancy that guests are afraid to relax. The library boasts plenty of books and movies.
Extras: Guests will find enough kitchenware and linens to choke a flea market! The kitchen is well stocked with small appliances, utensils, pots and pans, dishes, glassware, flatware, and spices. Kids will enjoy several cubic feet of Legos and building blocks as well as puzzles, games, books, and other toys. Binoculars, beach towels, coolers, beach chairs, boogie boards, sand toys, and beach umbrellas are left out for guests to enjoy.. Visitors will not need to bring much besides their clothes and personal items.
Many of our guests consider this 'their' second home; and accordingly, our most popular times can be booked over a year in advance. Fall and late spring usually have the best availability.
Guests will also enjoy a Blu-Ray player in every bedroom, a satellite TV with Hi-Def in the living room, and WiFi Internet access.
Location, Location, Location: Most of our guests appreciate not only the ocean and mountain views but the house's convenient location. It is in a semi-rural neighborhood, which has no street lights and a myriad of stars at night. Weather is usually warm and dry. Within easy driving distance to the Big Island's premiere beaches and golf courses, it is also conveniently located within driving range of Kailua-Kona and Hilo. Good restaurants and shopping opportunities are an easy drive away. Neighboring houses are quite a distance away, and the neighborhood is quiet and safe.
Each day offers lovely sunrises and sunsets as well as moonrises and moonsets. The star-scape on a clear night is breathtaking.
Home away from home: The house is very comfortable, clean, and well-maintained. Many of our guests say that they feel right at home as soon as they walk in the door. The living room walls are lined with books, videos, and art work. The 2400-square-foot house features a large central great room with bedrooms and bathrooms across the back and south side. This open floor plan allows for privacy as well as communal activities.
Most of our guests especially appreciate the wrap-around lanai, which includes 840 square feet facing the ocean. The lanai has five table-and-chair sets, two lounge chairs, two small tables,...

My Family and I had a wonderful stay at this property!!!!
Absolutely no misrepresentation of the property. You will find a home that is maintained well and stocked up with family in mind.
The sunsets and ocean views are amazing.
Stargazing from the lanai was one of our favorite nighttime activities.
The property owners were very helpful in planning for the trip and they literally live right next door. We did have one issue during our stay. I contacted the owners before we departed for our daily outing and by the time we returned it was corrected, I only bring this up as an example of how responsive the owners are.
We tried several beaches during our stay, Hapuna Beach State Park ended up being the overall favorite of our group, the park is about 12-15 minutes away from the house.
Again, we had a wonderful time, I would not hesitate to rent this property again in the future.

House was amazing and location was perfect. Overall we were thrilled with the property. I did send a couple texts to the owners and never received a response but not a big deal.

This was our 4th stay at Hale Kephart as this is such a unique property. It has expansive ocean views and we saw whales every day while staying early March 2024. House has 5 bedrooms and 3 full baths, so very little time spent on waiting for open bathroom. Kitchen was fully stocked with utensils, pots and pans, dishes and fair amount of cooking oils and spices.
Don and Kerrill have been wonderful hosts each and every time and can be a great resource for information about "The Spots".
Already looking forward to next year's stay.

We spent every morning watching whales on the lanai. The house is very spacious. The weather is amazing on that side of the island. There were 9 of us that stayed here. It was very roomy. We loved our daily wildlife visits. We will definitely return and reuse this house!

This was the perfect place for our extended family to gather. Watching whales from the lanai and sunsets with green flashes was wonderful. Having toys for the young kids was great. Very well

This is an awesome property. It is everything as advertised. It was so easy for our large group to relax and have fun. It was organized; there was plenty of spices and soaps and coffee pots. We will definitely try to return.

Our group of 11 had a wonderful stay in this home. We never once felt crowded and our kids had a fun time having adventures in the “jungle”. There were plenty of parking spots and everything we could think to ask for was available, thanks to our accommodating hosts. . The beach supplies and beach towels were a nice touch. We would love to stay here again next time.

The house was perfect for the 12 of us! Just far enough away from the noise, and easy point to get around the island.
The hosts respond immediately to any questions and provide plenty of information.
Thanks for all the tips, Don!
We'd stay again in a heartbeat!
Aloha!
