Discover Mountain Thunder Retreat, a tranquil and serene get-away nestled on the cool slopes of dormant volcano, Hualalai.
This vintage-style home is located on a 20-acre organic coffee farm. We are a quick 20-minute drive from the airport and are only 15 minutes from downtown Kona and multiple white-sand beaches.
The 4-bedroom home has been renovated to add modern luxuries including a gourmet kitchen with a brand-new double oven, Viking range, dishwasher and coffee/wine bar. The vintage charm hasn’t been lost, however, with 30-foot ceilings in the living area, detailed crown molding and 2 fireplaces.
The property boasts 3 master bedrooms (2 California King and 1 Queen) and a playfully-decorated kid’s room. The huge covered lanai on the main level is equipped with rocking chairs, dining for 8, a gas grill and gas firepit so guests can enjoy our legendary sunsets. A second private lanai is located off of one of the upstairs master suites with views of our breathtaking coastline and organic coffee farm.
The temperatures are cool and comfortable year-round and heaters are located throughout for those chilly mornings. Be sure to pack a jacket! We are an easy walk from multiple hiking trails, including our own on-site Nature Trail full of tropical plants, wildlife and lava tubes. We even invite you to pick your own avocado, citrus, guava and bananas grown right here on our property.
As a special offer, our guests will receive a complimentary 4x4 tour of our 20-acre property upon arrival or at any time throughout their stay. Another benefit of staying on a privately-owned coffee farm? We will provide each booking with freshly roasted coffee to enjoy during your visit.
There is a 5-night minimum stay. Check out is at 11 AM and check in is at 4:00 PM. Early check-ins or late check-out's may be requested through the owner. This is a non-smoking, no pets property. Hawaii Tax ID 012-427-8784-01....

Love this place! The host was over the top accommodating. Loved the fresh Kona coffee and fresh fruit. The complimentary tour of Mountain Thunder was the best tour we had on the Big Island. The home and its surroundings are stunning. With views of the ocean and sunsets from nearly every room in the home. We loved having a grill and beach toys, and games at the house. Would stay here again in a heartbeat. Thank you, John.

Had a wonderful stay at Mountain Thunder. The house is spacious and fully equipped. The huge lanai has a great view - enjoyed many mornings with a great cup of coffee and many evenings around the fire table. We had a special family vacation on the Big Island and John and his crew made it especially memorable. Would highly recommend if staying on the Big Island.

We had a wonderful stay at the retreat. The house itself is beautiful, well-appointed, and just as the photos depict. The tour with John was an informative treat. After long days hiking, snorkeling and exploring, returning to the retreat was blissful. Thank you for sharing this incredible property with us. (And the coffee is fantastic!)

Lynn, our host, was awesome, great communication. The fresh fruit and coffee in the home and welcome sign started the stay out great. The tour of the coffee plantation and operation was a highlight of the trip, the owner John was a great tour guide! We enjoyed sitting on the deck every morning drinking really good coffee. 20% discount at the gift store next door. It was a short drive to beaches and town for restaurants and shopping. Really, we didn't have any issues or complaints, the kids loved it too. The home was well stocked, from the kitchen to the bathrooms, nothing ran out during our stay. We had two adults and four teenagers (15-19). Look forward to staying here again!

Traveling with a group of 5 women friends and we had the extreme pleasure of staying at Mountain Thunder for 8 days. The house is incredible with lots of space indoors and out. Kitchen is huge and was a great space for all the cooking we did. It is fairly well stocked but was a treasure hunt to find things in all the drawers and cupboards! Provided coffee was a special treat and we all took something home from the great shop next door.
Beds were comfortable and bathrooms are roomy and functional. We enjoyed the ability to eat inside or out; great conversation area in the living room or out on the beautiful deck around the fire table with amazing views. House is an easy distance from Kailua-Kona but you feel like you are all alone in a remote jungle area! Because of the elevation, it is definitely cooler than being down in town so bring some warmer clothes for time spent here.
Coffee plantation tour was a highlight of our trip and the owner and staff were very responsive and friendly. Overall, we had a wonderful time and would definitely consider coming back on a future trip.

Our every comfort was considered at Mountain Thunder Retreat, from the personalized welcome and fruit in the foyer to the basket of special reserve coffees and teas in the beautifully appointed kitchen. This is a beautiful, spacious, inviting home with restful aesthetic detail.

We rented this beautiful, serene property for a surprise birthday party. We discovered an amazing house with many more amenities and extras than a typical rental house. From the complimentary coffee and fresh fruit to the free private tour and gift shop discount, we felt like VIPs. We all enjoyed the cooler weather up at altitude. Returning from the beach was a delight. Everything was as discribed and we enjoyed the spacious bedrooms, large dinning table, and grand lanai with views of the (occasional) sunset.
Lynn was very responsive to our questions and allowed us to graciously check in early. Throughout our stay, she was available for questions and queries.
It was an amazing vacation and we will be booking this house the next time we head to the Big Island. Mahalo!

I think the plantation house was the highlight of our stay on the Big Island. We were three couples of old college friends who were looking for a comfortable setting to spend time together. This location was perfect. The house and its amenities were perfect. The landscape was lush and the sound of the birds and frogs was relaxing. The tour of the plantation was very interesting too. The house was fully equipped with every thing we needed and the beds were comfortable. Lynn was very helpful answering our questions when booking. We would stay there again.

This property is nestled up in the cloud forest in Kona. Even when it is hot and steamy on the beach it is pleasant up at the house. You must be prepared for mist and some rain. But we enjoyed sitting on the Lanai and drinking a hot tea while look out onto the cloud forest and beyond.
The house is spacious and gave up ample room to have seven people stay there without feeling crowded. It is very clean and comfortable. We would certainly come back again.

Mountain Thunder coffee plantation was such a wonderful place for our trip. The location was perfect for ease of access up and down the Kona coast. The property was clean and beautiful and full of every amenity you might need, and of course, the coffee from the farm was fabulous. My kids loved staying there, especially having their own huge rooms and beds to themselves. The hosts were gracious and welcoming, and always available to answer any questions. The views from the lanai were spectacular, especially at sunset. I would absolutely stay here again next time we return to the big island.
