This cottage was exactly what I wanted for a birthday getaway with my boyfriend. It felt like we were secluded in the middle of the rainforest and seeing brightly colored pheasants strut through the yard every day was exciting. The location is perfect for visiting Kilauea, especially since the $30 entrance fee is good for 7 days. The interior of the cottage was clean and all of the furniture was comfy. We both appreciated the thoughfulness put into the materials left in the house (bird identification book, large map of island with magnifying glass, and plush bathrobes) which made our stay more enjoyable and inspired our adventures.

We loved this little house. Perfect for 2 people who want quiet getaway. Very close to volcano national park which we loved. Propane fireplace kept us cozy during crazy rain and windstorm. Would highly recommend. No TV but good internet.

Good place for us to stay for two nights so we could be close by to visit the Volcano National Park multiple days. Stayed until after dark one night to see the lava glow and then didn’t have far to drive. It’s old but clean and we loved being in the middle of the rain forest. It had everything we needed (except the toaster didn’t work). No TV but there was plenty of reading material, a radio, and internet availability. (Can’t remember if Wi-Fi or satellite.) Even in August we needed to use the room heater and stove at night. No AC but there was no need for it. We liked our stay.

Unfortunately I booked it for my honeymoon and the pictures that were shared on vrbo were outdated. It was more rundown than I expected. The dishes and other small amenities that we did have were dirty or sticky. I wouldn’t make coffee in the coffee pot. It was a decent size for 2 people and if you are used to roughing it this may work for you. As a honeymoon spot it did not work for me.

We absolutely loved our stay! The yard and deck were tranquil and beautiful, and the fire table was a great perk! The indoor fireplace made the cabin warm and cozy, and the bed was super comfy. The kitchen had everything we needed, and extra items to enhance our stay were very much appreciated. Very close to Volcanoes park, so it was easy to drive in after supper for a night hike to see the volcano. We definitely recommend it and would stay again.

A cute Old World cottage hidden away in a tropical forest. At first it was hard to find when we arrived as the evening was heavily overcast and raining. As in the description, our GPS, Apple Maps and Wayz wrongly named the west half of the Anuhea Circle as “I’iwi Road” and the other half as “Anuhea Circle”. Turn left at the end of I’iwi and you’ll find the cottage. If you turn right, it’s a long way around on dirt roads.
Julie was highly responsive to our queries. What a great host. The gravel walkway from the driveway to the house is very charming with moss growing in between the rocks. The steppingstones themselves are not slippery at all, by the way.
I recommend anyone renting this unit to take advantage of the back patio and its fire table. It is not complicated at all, especially for those who use a gas fired barbecue at home. The peace and serenity sitting there with the fire on, listening to the crickets and the frogs sing is just incredible.
The closeness to the volcano, which we explored extensively, was also very convenient. The restaurants nearby also serve very good food. Our drive to and from Hilo did not feel very long at all as it is a very enjoyable drive through the lush mountain roads.
Having the washer and dryer was also a nice bonus. Just be aware you need to go behind the house, underneath the kitchen to find them.
If there are any criticisms, I would say it was a little difficult to find in the dark at first, but coming back from our day trips, even in the dark, it was not difficult to find at all. We also wish the 700W microwave would have a higher wattage as it took a long time to heat a cup of tea. But I’d like to emphasize that these comments are extremely minor.
We would definitely stay here again on our next trip to the Big Island.

The inside is clean. The outside is lovely. The lush green plants and beautiful flowers in bloom make a wonderful place to just sit and relax. I loved hearing all the birds singing.

We were looking for a nice, quiet, getaway and this cottage definitely delivered. The house is very cute, well-appointed, and comfortable. The lanai with the fire table is a great place to enjoy your morning coffee or your mid-day or evening Mai Tais. The various heaters are plenty to warm the place even on chilly Volcano evenings and mornings. We could see the glow from the Kilauea crater right from the driveway, which inspired us to drive over to the rim for a closer look.
The fire table ran out of propane while we were there, but a simple phone message to the property caretaker had it refilled by the very next day, so kudos for responsive service.
We saw a group of 6 Nene birds wander through the backyard one morning, and the chickens, dogs, and cats of the neighborhood gave everything a very quaint and peaceful feeling. The cocqui frogs seemed to be a lot quieter than during our last trip to Volcano and combined with the other forest sounds to make a very pleasant audio backdrop to our time here.
I would recommend this place to a friend and we would have no qualms about staying here again. Mahalo for a great back half to our vacation on the Big Island.
