Pu'u O Hoku Ranch offers a unique getaway for travelers seeking a rustic retreat. You can hike, swim, stargaze, surf, and see a working ranch in action. Pu'u O Hoku is one of the few places in the islands where you can feel Hawaii as it once was. The Sunrise cottage is just a short drive from the black-sand beaches of Halawa Valley.
On the hill above the bustle of the ranch, surrounded by tropical gardens, with panoramic windows offering views over the bluffs to the ocean, the Sunrise Cottage is perfect for romantic getaways or small groups. Master bedroom with a queen bed, second bedroom with two twins, spacious living and dining room, fully-equipped kitchen, two bathrooms, and a shaded lanai.
The Sunrise cottage was built in the 1930s in a classic Hawaiian ranch style, furnished with Balinese and Hawaiian wood and textiles. The cottage is off the grid and runs on renewable energy, the water onsite is from our well.
We can also deliver fresh biodynamic and organic produce as well as fresh beef and venison to your cottage for you to cook during your stay!

My partner and I were absolutely enchanted by the sunrise cottage, the ranch and the entire island. The cottage itself is roomy, well cared for, clean and full of beautiful character -- not to mention it's a one-of-a-kind abode on a magical tropical hilltop! We felt very much at home there. Nani and the ranch team were so wonderful, and we want to give Nani and Zoe special shout outs for helping us with horseback and beach adventures. We really felt so lucky to find this place and to spend time there. A true gem which feels harder and harder to find. Thank you so much, Nani and team! <3

We had an incredible week at Pu’u O Hoku Ranch. Nani and the entire ranch team were incredibly communicative both before and during our stay, and suggested so many wonderful activities both on and off the ranch property. The cottage was amazing, with beautiful view overlooking the green hills of the ranch and glimpses of the sea. The day bed with huge picture frame windows was perfect for afternoon naps. We did all the suggested hikes and made a point to watch the sunrise every morning. We hope to visit again soon.

Was on a mom daughter trip and went to a yoga retreat at the lodge. It was lovely to stay at the Sunrise Cottage and live simply for five nights. Best to buy your groceries in the small town by the airport as there is not much out there. There can be mosquitoes so bring bug spray. Beds were comfortable and great water pressure! I brought some more light to do and laundry as there are no laundry facilities on site. Would definitely stay there again on the island.

The cottage at the ranch is a lovely and quiet getaway on the east side of Molokai. It has beautiful views of the hillsides and huge windows to feel immersed in the natural beauty of the island. The kitchen, bathroom and cottage itself are well stocked and comfortable for all you need. Grab some groceries in town, hike the ranch, take a horseback ride and enjoy!

This cottage was perfectly set up the cliffs with surround sound ocean and wind. The cool evening air and clear skies makes for a stargazer’s dream, along with the delight of the frogs’ serenade. I ordered ranch beef, fruit, and vegetables for the cottage which was not only delicious but also fed me the entirety of my stay.
What is most memorable though are moments spent with Molokai Hawaiians who work at the farm and ranch and others across the island who were all so generous in sharing their histories, culture, knowledge, and kindness with me.

Stay at Pu'u O Hoku if you're looking for a reset at the end of the earth. We found ourselves reconnecting our biorhythms to the natural world. With the eastern exposure and window screens, we were up with the sun. With the walking and riding available on the ranch, we were ready to sleep not long after dark. With the fresh produce grown on the property, we were nourished by simple and clean food prepared with care.
Special thanks to Honora and Lindsey for their contributions to this peaceful pause in our usual life. We hope to someday return!

Pu'u O Hoku Ranch, where Sunrise Cottage is located, is about a 50 minute drive from Kaunakakai, the town in central Moloka'i. The last 5 miles or so of the drive is on a one lane road. It's a beautiful drive, but windy. It's definitely not recommended to drive at night; there's more than one hairpin curve to navigate.
There are screens on the windows so we were able to leave them open throughout the night. We did not leave the front door open as there is a gap at the bottom of the screen door which would basically invite the geckos in.
To our delight we found a generous bag of freshly picked produce (see photo) awaiting us on our arrival. It was too bad that we couldn't know what the produce would include as it turned out we ended up with duplicates of bananas, potatoes and green beans since we brought groceries prior to the drive there.
The description of hearing the "roar of the ocean" was not completely accurate. Our view out the living room windows (see photo) were of the valley; the ocean wasn't not close enough to hear it.
Ants were a problem in the kitchen and bedroom. There is no garbage disposal. The kitchen had the necessary small appliances, except no microwave oven. There isn't any condiments for cooking; you basically have to bring everything in, even cooking oil and salt and pepper.
Lots of large windows in the DR and LR allow for unobstructed views of the valley. In the evenings, you'll spot a few geckos clinging the outside of the windows
