House Description
Come stay in at our park-like property on a breezy hilltop with a wide view of the ocean less than a mile distant. The pool and adjoining covered cabana is secluded and private in the backyard. The neighborhood is a pleasant but ordinary residential area on the east side of the island.
A typical older home in this former sugar plantation area, the house reflects our local Japanese legacy with shoji screens throughout the house. They allow for air flow when wanted or privacy when desired. From the carport, the ground level entry leads into a carpeted and comfortable living room. There's plenty of room here for lounging, reading or enjoying entertainment on the smart tv. Central to the home is the fully equipped kitchen. Among our guests, some professional chefs have commented how well set up the kitchen is. You can easily step from kitchen to dining room (seats 6), or to the screened lanai where another table and chairs allows for lanai dining. The lanai also has a comfortable sofa and chairs. Two bedrooms are on main floor each with an ensuite bathroom. Off from the kitchen is a small Tv room, a game room, or for reading or just snoozing. On the lower level is a bedroom with two twin beds and a petite full bathroom, and a TV.
A roomy laundry is also on the lower level.
Right out the sliding glass door from the living room is the fully fenced swimming pool and cabana shelter with table, chairs and a charcoal grill. The back yard is very private as is the rest of the property. The house sits on a small hilltop with lovely views of the ocean about a mile distant. The driveway is gated and the property is fully fenced.

THE HOUSE IS SOLELY FOR REGISTERED GUESTS.
NO outside visitors are allowed other than the REGISTERED GUESTS listed in your booking. If you have friends in the islands reach out to us to discuss ANY invitations of outsider guests to the house. This restriction is for liability issues, compliance with our permit to operate as a short term rental, and good neighborly relations.
AC is uncommon in this part of Hawaii because the temperatures vary from about 64 to 86 degrees year round. It's lovely, naturally! Therefore, there is no AC in this house.
Pepeekeo is north of downtown Hilo by about 7 miles. The house sits on a 3 acre parcel next to the more heavily settled area of the village. There are two convenience stores nearby and a post office. Shopping is generally done in Hilo. Nearby there is another convenience store that also serves coffee, beverages and a variety of freshly made sandwiches and wraps.
Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden is also near by, about a mile from the house across the highway, and runs about 5 miles long.
This botanical garden can be explored as a drive or a hike and has a lovely large park overlooking the ocean.
Akaka Falls (440 feet high) state park is in nearby Honomu, about 8 miles from the house. Volcano National Park is just under an hour to the south and the stunningly beautiful Waipio Valley is just under an hour to the north. Our "Pepeekeo House" is a good place for friends and family to base while touring the east side of our lovely Hawaii Island (The Big Island). Our place is comfortable and clean but modest in style. The Hamakau coast is our treasured gem, gorgeous and tropical!

Great property for families with kids! Having a whole pool to ourselves was fun. Having 3 bedrooms with 3 bathrooms was convenient. Close enough to Hilo and the nearby sites.

Perfect location just outside of Hilo. House was absolutely adorable, and super comfortable. We loved the uniqueness and how quaint it was. Very well equipped kitchen and very clean. The screened porches was perfect to sit outside and be protected from the bugs. Pool was a big bonus for us and the kids. We would definitely stay here again if we stay on the Hilo side of the island. We loved our stay here!!

Short drive to Hilo. Great location if you like to be close yet removed from being in town.
Quiet neighborhood.
Kitchen is stocked with pretty much anything you could ever need.
Outdoor screened porch is a great space to be.
If you don't mind a real Hawaiian house that you can feel the old hawaiian history in then this is a nice place to stay.

My parter and I fell in love with this property when we saw it pop up on VRBO for our dates. We were not disappointed when we checked-in.
We wanted to spend a few chill days near Hilo during our three week trip to Hawaii. This property meet all of our needs and more. It was exactly as described.
It’s private, beautiful, comfortable, and well stocked. The place was spotless when we arrived. The property owner was helpful and communicative. We had absolutely no issues during our stay.
If you are looking for a unique property that will optimize your relaxation, this place is it. If we ever come to this area of Hawai’i again, we will be repeat customers.

Excellent communication with host, beautiful Japanese style interior. Some of the kitchen amenities needed restocking (coffee filter) and knives required sharpening, but overall lovely stay and great for a family.

My Wife and I love Hilo and staying here only reinforced that view. Minutes from downtown. Quiet neighborhood with lots of privacy. The grounds are beautiful and the pool was fun! Very comfortable with lots of amenities. We spent most of our time on the lanai watching the geckos hunt bugs. The house opens up widely to let in the air. The kitchen is well stocked and ready to go. A small mini mart is within walking distance if you need something quick. We would come back in a heartbeat.

Our stay was wonderful! It is on the rainy side of the island, but we found little breaks in the rain to enjoy the farmers market, lava tubes, gardens, waterfalls, and beaches nearby. We felt like we were locals living in this neighborhood.
The house has a nice screened in lanai where we spent most of our time when at home and enjoyed most of our dinners. It was nice to have a spot to still enjoy the outside scenery while staying dry.
The rest of the house was nice, even though some of the friendly lizards did make their way in. My favorite part of all was symphony of nature sounds that lulled me to sleep every night. I even recorded it on my phone to take a little piece of Hawaii home with me!
We would definitely stay at this location again!

We enjoyed our stay, very private setting. Property has old world charm with unique features not found in modern day settings. Old downtown Hilo just a short drive where you can experience the charm and history it has to offer. If you’re looking for a pleasant, private setting at an affordable price then this is your ticket !

We have stayed at this property twice in the last 4 years, and find it to be a comfortable base to explore from. It is quite roomy and a good place to be when you want to have some privacy or downtime, but close enough to town that you don't have to worry about a long drive. While the property is a bit dated, it is well kept and the owner/manager is communicative and helpful.

We loved our stay at this amazing house! This is the feel of a real Hawaiian home from my time living on Island. The screened in porch is were we ate most of our meals and read books. The home is spacious and inviting. The pool was perfect on the hot days. Would definitely stay again. Thanks!!
