This property was very clean, comfortable, and peaceful. My husband has severe asthma, but we noticed no hint of mold problems that a few other reviewers had mentioned. We plan to stay here again.

From the moment you enter the cul-de-sac and the approach to the cottage you get the feeling that this is your home sweet home a slice of island life.
Then as you enter the home, you can see the floors are as clean as your own home so you walk around bare feet. The TLC and layout of the home gets my high five. It gets cold, 45-50 degrees F and the space heaters are nice and comfortable bring the interior to a comfy 68 degrees in a matter of a half hour. No fuss stove adds to the warmth and ambiance.
The drive to Kailua-Kona takes you along rural seascapes dotted with smaller communities reflecting the Hawaii of old, not to mention the short jaunt into Hilo and the Hamakua Coast.
If you are seeking value within your budget, Volcano Cottage gets my vote! Keep up the good work.

This place was a great location located just three minutes up the road from the golf course and winery in the Volcano area and five minutes from the national park entrance. Note to bring drinkable water with you or buy some in Volcano village (also close by). Great neighborhood.

The location, just across Hwy 11 from the Military Camp in HVNP (with gated road that bicyclists can navigate) means we could bicycle into HVNP without having to ride on Hwy 11. The wrap around deck on the house was good weather protection for our cycles overnight. The neighborhood is safe and well maintained. There are dogs and various fowl in the area - don't expect to sleep late. Otherwise, its a quiet neighborhood.
The beds are comfortable. Nice bedding and linens were provided. There is dish soap, sponge, paper towels, salt and pepper in kitchen. The bathrooms have little bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion. Pump bottles of hand soap at each sink.
I have three issues with the house that lowered my rating.
1) The VRBO listing says the house has "water catchment", but after booking, Vacasa sends information that in the fine print says "guests should bring their own drinking water". The brochure in the house says "the water is filtered for consumption." This ambiguity was annoying. Did the property manager KNOW the water was not potable, or was this CYA because some guests freak out about drinking rainwater? We couldn't get a straight answer from either the Vacasa help line nor the local property manager. Who knows, but we got all out drinking water from the HVNP Visitor Center just in case (which is also rainwater catchment, but from the taste, obviously heavily chlorinated.) The listing, the in-house information, and the Vacasa property management fine print should be consistent!
2. The lower kitchen cabinets apparently were water damaged at some time, making them extremely moldy. All pots, pans, utensils, etc. stored in them had that stench - just as the entire house did before we aired it out. I recommend that before booking, ask if the lower kitchen cabinets have been replaced since Feb 2023 - apparently that is the plan, but in the meantime - the visible mildew & stench after opening a cabinet made the entire kitchen not very appealing for eating or cooking.
3) Several lamps in the house not plugged in because broken. The lounge furniture is old, the bedroom wicker dresser is mildewy. Some pots/pans are not in good condition. It's as if the house owner does not want to invest in maintaining the property. Note that the house interior was very clean, the problems are with the house fixtures and cabinets. Thankfully the fireplace plus lounge fan worked well - it was cold the week we were there.

This property was perfect for our family of four. It is 5 minutes to the Volcano's National Park entrance and close to several restaurants in Volcano Village. The house was a bit musty but that isn't uncommon with rentals I've used on the islands before. The air is so fresh that after the windows are opened, it clears it right up. You do have to take your trash to the transfer station, the closest one was not going to be open on the day we needed to take it so we found one about 7 miles away in Glenwood/Mt View that was open Tu/Fri/Sat right off Old Volcano Rd. We used the Foodland in Keaau for our groceries and that worked out well, it is almost halfway between Hilo and Volcano and easy to get to. Overall I would recommend this vacation property.

Check in process was flawless. The house was very clean and had everything we needed for our stay. Plenty of extra blankets are provided as it gets chilly at night. Very safe and quiet neighborhood- 2 miles from Hawaii Volcanoes NP!! Made for a perfect location for heading to the park at nighttime. Also close to Punalu'u Beach and beaches around Hilo (we loved Carlsmith Beach Park)!
Tip: Pick up groceries in Hilo, there aren't many stores/food options in Volcano.
