This property was as expected from the listing. It is about 40 minutes from Hilo, the last 5 miles from the house consists of literally a roller coaster of a road (paved and fun) but the last mile to the house is not far from rock climbing (5mph tops, suv required, no cars) The property is largely unkept, but the inside of the house is well taken care of and includes most of what you'd need. Power is not an issue, despite what previous reviewers said, apparently the house runs on solar during day and batteries at night, and those have been upgraded so generator is never needed.
It is on the cool side at night/morning since many of the windows are open, but not uncomfortably so. There was also a cat which is not the owners that stopped at nothing trying to come inside (apparently previous guests fed it) but it may go away eventually if guests stop feeding it (the owner doesn't want the cat inside since it belongs to a neighbor and some future guests may be allergic. There are huge snails around the lawn in the morning which were cool, be careful where you step, they have huge shells. Over all the property is quiet aside from birds, and if you are looking for a cabin type stay far from the city, this one fits the bill.

If you're looking for some eclectic charm & a unique stay that has everything you need then this is the place for you.
First, they have a cat named Delilah that seems to live on their covered deck (not owned by the owner) who is the sweetest angel you'll ever meet. Secondly, the space is amazing. We stayed 5 nights & continued to find small little touches to the unit throughout the week that elevated the experience. The bathroom area was one of our favorite spots as well as lounging outside with Delilah on the deck as the sun came up in the mornings. All of the sounds of nature & how secluded it was were simply amazing.
There was some bad sadly but Amanda was all over it as best as she could be considering she wasn't on property. It seems the kinks of the property haven't quite been worked out yet. We didn't have power one morning as something happened with the solar battery. That night when we cam back, it was fixed. We didn't have consistent hot water the whole time we were there. It would go from hot, to cold, to hot about every 90sec. This part was a big bummer as we had very much looked forward to using the bathtub. Also the roads in the subdivision are horrendous. We'd rented a convertible & to drive the 3 blocks out it would take 10min to avoid all the potholes in the road. Amanda offered a partial refund to compensate for the issues.
Overall though my wife & I really enjoyed the space & would stay again once the kinks of the property have been completely sorted.

This property was not as expected. But we made the best of it and still enjoyed out time.
Before booking, you should know that frequently there is no power (at least in winter) which is from solar panels. You must go under the house and turn on a gas powered generator. This is loud and smells of strong gas fumes and is recommended by the owner to run for only about 1 hour per day. I could only charge my cell phone or laptop when the generator was on or in my car. Be sure to arrive with a charged cell phone.
The electric door locks did not work. The owner was available only via text, and got us a key so we could lock up. Be sure to take the owner's cell phone number with you.
The location is beautiful. Worth the terrible road you must drive in an SUV with holes galore. Think of this as an indoor camping experience. Headlamps were handy!!
The upstairs bed was super comfy. With the Hawaiian breeze, the best sleep I've had in a long time.
Two other guests arrived as a double booking, so the kinks are still being worked out.
Bring food so you don't have to go back down that road right away. No oven, so don't bring pizza.
If you're adventurous and willing to go with the flow, book this. You won't be sorry! If you're expecting 5 star perfect luxury, choose something else.
We had a great stay once we adjusted our expectations!
