Rick’s Place
Discover how to REALLY relax!
Would you like to relax in your own peaceful pool that you share with no one, listening to your favorite tunes, while enjoying the vast expanse of the ocean right in front of you - amazing whales, spinner dolphins and colorful fish, the sunsets, and complete serenity, for less than the price of a resort hotel room? Then our home will be perfect for you.
If you are like me, you want to do nothing but relax and disconnect while on vacation. I don’t like resorts, eating every meal out, sitting around a pool with 100 other people.
Rick’s Place is a cozy, romantic home, perfect for two. Unwind, enjoy each other’s company, and disconnect from your crazy busy life. I suggest stopping in town for a few groceries. Spend your days sitting around in the solar-heated pool, reading on the lanai or sitting by the sea wall. Watch the whales jump in the winter months (they will wake you up at night during whale season!), Enjoy cooking dinner on the gas barbeque or in our well-equipped kitchen while enjoying an icy cocktail. Milolii sunsets are the highlight of the day- no two are ever the same. Turn off all the lights and lay out on the chaise lounges and look at the moon and the Milky Way at night. Showering in the outdoor shower with the ocean breeze blowing on you is refreshing and revitalizing. There is good Wi-Fi and Direct TV on smart TVs, as well as a Blu-Ray player.
There is a viewing area on the cliff where the sea while enjoying your morning coffee or your evening libations. The Kona fishing fleet aims for the waters in front of the house, so sometimes you can witness a hook-up while staring out to sea (we provide binoculars). You can look down and see tropical fish and the occasional turtle swim by. Sometimes the surf is high and the waves crash against the cliff dramatically. One guest called the high surf “Hawaiian fireworks” which is a great description.
The drive down from the highway takes you from 1500 ft. elevation to sea level. It’s a winding ride, but there are spectacular views on the way down. If you want to go to town every night or do a lot of sightseeing, the drive may be inconvenient. For a day trip every few days, it is no big deal.
There is easy access to water and great snorkeling a short walk north of the house at the Milolii Beach Park. There are many beautiful beaches and good restaurants within an hour’s drive. Our house is centrally located between Kailua-Kona and Volcanoes National Park.
If you need supplies during your stay, there are well-stocked grocery stores 20 minutes south, in Ocean View.
My home has one bedroom, 1.5 baths, plus an outdoor full bath with a shower overlooking the ocean. Every room in the house except the half bath offers up an ocean view. Kitchen is easy to cook in and is well-appointed, and the living area is furnished very comfortably and is open and breezy. Bedroom and living room glass French doors open to the ocean view and breeze. The wrap-around lanai includes a small solar heated pool.

Great stay. Relaxing. Hope to return again.
Amazing place
The host, Dan, was very accommodating and really easy to work with. The stay was incredible. The home was very comfortable, the views and sunsets and star watching were amazing. We had a wonderful time staying in this property and I can’t recommend it enough.
We had an amazing vacation at "Rick's Place" in Milolii Beach on the Big island. Dan is the best Host we have ever had, We arrived late and the doors were open with a beautiful breeze flowing through the house and lovely Hawaiian music playing. The house was so clean and the bed was very comfortable. Sleeping every night with the sound of crashing waves and gentle breezes was heavenly. Dan has everything one could need, The kitchen was stocked with supplies, dishwasher soap, tons of utensils and dishware and pots, pans, coffee makers...couldn't ask for more! We loved the pool and swan daily. Water was good temperature and pool very clean. Sitting out on the point that lead down from the home made for many sweet afternoons. The waves crashing up on the lava cliffs was spectacular. We wanted to avoid Resorts for a change and this was perfect. If you want complete peace, quiet and isolation this is your place.I also enjoyed those little geckos that wandered about with their beautiful colors. Friendly little creatures. We had many great adventures snorkeling and pods of dolphins swam alongside and under our boat trip to Captain Cook. The people were all so kind and helpful. I drove into the little village of Milolii and met some cool natives. Most important thing is to honor and respect the people and the island and in return you will be given such kindness. We enjoyed grilling fresh fish as Dan has a gas grill. Mahalo Dan! We will be back!
Great place. VERY remote - that’s the best, and the worst part about it. We would definitely return.
This was a fantastic house with an amazing view and we couldn’t have enjoyed our stay more. Dan is super responsive and goes over and above to make sure everything is taken care of. Highly recommend if you want to get away from it all and enjoy the beautiful ocean views.
Great place to just relax. Quiet, private location. Comfortable house, amenities were just what was needed, and fans on lanai were awesome. Communication with owner was easy and informative. Great place for people looking to just unwind. Made a day trip out north for horseback riding, and a day out south for volcano. Otherwise, just relaxed by the pool.
Had a wonderful stay at Rick’s Place. It’s exactly as described - peaceful and private. We spent a lot of time in the pool and on the deck enjoying the ocean view.Dan was quick to answer any questions. There’s everything you need to cook, and we really appreciated the super comfortable bed. Outstanding vacation!
My wife and I stayed at this house for 7 nights. It worked out great for us. You can't beat the views. The house is well equipped, great deck, pool and grill. Would stay here again.
Out of all the places we have stayed this was one of the absolute best stays yet! Super relaxing... a private pool with an amazing ocean view... beautiful sunsets...what more could you ask for? The kitchen had everythjng we needed to enjoy a night in. We would for sure book this place a million times.
The house had everything you’d need for a comfortable vacation. The host thought of everything, from gear for swimming and snorkeling to extra ice to spices for cooking. It was a great place. I especially liked the small pool for cooling off and appreciated the fans for guests that are not as comfortable with higher temperatures. My only issue was that the time to travel to activities in the captain cook area. I’d checked the miles, but not travel time which is long due to the very windy roads. Still I doubt I could have found as great a place anywhere closer. And I expect I’ll be back!
The property is in such a great location right on the ocean. I think it had the best layout for actually seeing the waves breaking on the cliffs. The pool was nice to hang out in. We saw a few dolphins and a sea turtle. The cabinets could be cleaned a bit better and it would be nice to have a cabinet available to put our food and supplies into. The house is not sealed, so there are constantly geckos inside and on the counters. We also had a centipede in the bedroom the first morning we woke up. That was a bit unnerving. There aren't curtains on the bedroom doors. While some people might be comfortable with this, it would be nice to have the option for privacy especially since in the welcome book you're told the owners will come by to pick up the garbage and service the pool without specific days or times. Overall, it was a good stay. There are books to reference for the island and a few games and dvds. The radio with speakers outside was a nice touch. The sunsets couldn't be beat!
Incredibly relaxing and beautiful home
This was our first time vacationing on The Big Island after many years of visiting Oahu, Kauai and Maui. This island and THIS HOUSE were worth the wait!!! We have absolutely loved our stay enjoying the amazing view, pool, deck, house and VIBES. Dan was a wonderful host, great communication. We explored a little every day, but mainly spent time here CHILLING. So grateful, and already planning to come back! Mahalo!!!
Dan’s home (aka Rick’s Place) was absolutely perfect for someone looking for a calm, peaceful and secluded ocean front view. This is the most well stocked home we’ve ever rented. They have everything for you. It is off the beaten path, so for those looking for downtime with the ocean waves crashing in your backyard, then this is the right spot for you. As my wife said as we left, she’s never been more disappointed to leave a rental house behind.
Words truly cannot describe the setup, setting, and experience that we had during our stay last week for our 15th anniversary! What a truly special place to enjoy on the Big Island and totally worth the drive to get away from all the tourists in the Kona area. Dan is DA MAN who was always available in assisting us with needs/questions leading up to our trip, checking in a couple of times during the trip and never impeding on our stay. His attention to details and amenities at the house are top notch. The being Host we have ever experienced on a trip!Mahalo, Dan!
The pictures don’t do this place justice. Dan was great with local recommendations and definitely has a special place to stay. Definitely did not want to leave.
It's a beautiful & comfortable house-photos accurate. The drive down is a bit nerve racking if you're a flat lander, but it gets easier the more trips you take. There are many spices & condiments in kitchen. Stop first to see what you may need, then grab a cooler off the deck and head to Ocean view for groceries. Driving everywhere didn't seem too far-it is so scenic. We watched the sunset from the pool every night-glorious!
Everything you could do when all you want to do is CHILL
This place is so incredible.
Incredible ocean views right out your back door. Everything was amazing, including how well stocked everything was from dishes and pots and pans the knives to beach towels, the chairs for the patio, you name it this place had it.
This is my second stay at this property, I love the property. If you want to be in the middle of the action this is not the place if you want to lay back and enjoy the island this, is it. 1 hour away from VNP and an hour from Kona if you need to go into town, close enough to Hilo for a day trip as well. The small pool and view cannot be beat to complete the deal. The house is great, the bedding is nice, plenty of towels, kitchen is very well stocked. I cook most of our meals. Yoga mats everything you need for day beach trips. It's the perfect place to relax and recharge.
We loved everything about this home and never wanted to leave! It had everything you need on vacation and then some. The view is amazing and the outdoor shower was fantastic! This is my all time favorite vacation home ever! Thank you Dan!
This was our second stay at Rick's place and it was just as perfect as the first. The home is perfect for 2, the host is responsive and friendly, and the view is breathtaking. Thank you Dan for hosting us and sharing your beautiful home. Mahalo!
To best describe a stay here - draw a 3 inch circle. This circle is everything you do in life - work, play, eat, sleep, social gathering, moving around - everything. Now hit a spot with the pen - just a little dot, about 1/4 inch outside the circle. This is it - everything away from you but within reach IF you need it, but all peace and quiet and calm and comfortable. Just so nice and the opportunity to totally disconnect. Loved it!!!
Everything was perfect. Was so relaxing, enjoyed watching the whales from the patio.Planning on returning next year.
The definition of perfect in two words - Rick's Place. I honestly don't know how this property could be any better. The house and property, the view, and the location are absolutely ideal. That said, this property probably isn't for everyone due to its remote location. However, if you are looking for peace and quiet, an incredible ocean view, and a house that is well apportioned with everything you could possibly need, then this is your place. You can see whales, turtles, and whatever else decides to make an appearance in the ocean right off the lanai. The geckos and yellow bills were fun to watch. Rick's Place is a special property and I cannot say enough good about it. My partner and I are looking forward to coming back.
We really enjoyed this home. It was nice to enjoy the private type backyard. Dan was a wonderful host.
Rick's Place is phenomenal! Process was smooth from start to finish. Can't say enough good things about this home! We arrived after dark and didn't realize there would be such a long a drive down to sea level BUT it was so worth it when we arrived! Dan had the house lit up and wonderful Hawaiian music playing for us. The outside lights with motion sensors guided us in with no issues. We were surprised to find the home so open with the sea air and breeze flowing in all windows. This ended up being one of our most favorite things about the place, just the fresh sea air! We unpacked quickly and rested only to wake up to the most beautiful view. The pictures in the post don't do it justice. The waves crashing on the lava wall became our favorite sound both day and night. We enjoyed sitting out on the overlook reading and watching for fish and whales and just the peaceful calm that goes along with Rick's place. We saw dolphins, reef sharks, fish, boats, swimmers and even scuba divers (at night too!) The pool was great! We had plans to explore the island but ended up rearranging our itineniary to accommodate being at the house most days which felt like home to us! Dan was responsive to our needs and an excellent host seen by the home's detail and can say it was the best stocked vrbo we've ever been to and I am not kidding! Outdoor shower was heavenly! If you're thinking about booking just do it, what a magical, beautiful place! Thank you Dan, we will be back!!!Mike and Angie
Our 4th time to stay here. Love the location and listening to the surf at night. We saw all kinds of marine life as well as cardinals, mynas and other birds. A windy road getting in and out,but all part of the experience. Dan is a great host, available if needed. The closest town,Ocean view, is a nice place to go for dinner or groceries. A great place to go for relaxation and away from the party crowd.
Could write a book about this place. Such a quiet, relaxing & comfortable place, not to mention the amazing view! If you need a place to recenter & rejuvenate, this is it! Stayed for 5 nights & never left the whole time. Kitchen & grill perfect for making meals. The outdoor shower is to die for! Dan is an absolute perfect host with great attention to details of this lovely hale. Kitchen dishes, pots & pans were clean & nice; towels were thick & soft; bed was super comfy. If we're lucky enough to come to the Big Island again, we will definitely plan a stay here. Mahalo, Dan, for sharing such a wonderful home!
Our second time staying here! If you need a perfect getaway from the stresses of the world, come stay here. Dan is a phenomenal host, one of the nicest humans you will ever meet, and his house just lovely!
We stayed at Rick’s Place for our honeymoon and it was a great time. Would stay there again! Dan was very responsive and made sure we had all we needed and that we arrived safely. Please do yourself a favor and stay here. The outdoor shower, the view, the pool, and quiet neighborhood is great.
Excellent property! Probably the most well-equipped rental we’ve stayed at. Everything has been thoughtfully curated to make one’s stay enjoyable—it’s not fancy but immensely comfortable. The setting is fantastic—right on the ocean with a delightful plunge pool and plenty of shade if needed. It’s pretty private—minimal noise from intermittent construction and a rental house two lots over. Bring your food with you as the nearest stores are 15 or so miles away and carry the basics. Then settle in for a relaxing time! The night skies are awesome. The host Dan was accessible and helpful.
This place is magical. The 180 degree views are spectacular. The private pool was a fantastic bonus. If you want a relaxing getaway then book Rick’s Place. We will be returning
Wonderful property for our 30th anniversary trip. All amenities were as shown and we did not need anything. Remote location was a nice thing since we did not need to go to town very much. Owner made sure our stay was special. We highly recommend this property.
My husband and I stayed at Rick’s place for my 30th birthday and it couldn’t have been more perfect. The house had stunning views from every room and the area was peaceful and quiet. As soon as we arrived, we loved Rick’s place so much that we canceled the rest of our plans and decided to stay there the whole trip. We didn’t miss a single sunset or sunrise and even saw a pod of dolphins! Our host Dan was super responsive and so welcoming. We will absolutely be back!
This place was perfect. It is so quiet there! We loved the small pool to cool down in. The view was wonderful. I personally loved all the extras in the kitchen! It is so nice not to have to buy a whole variety of spices! I cooked all our meals and that stove is wonderful! We ate well, rested, laughed and had a wonderful time. Thank you so much! Oh I do have some advice…. Wear mosquito repellent!!! Even if you think they are not out. Wear it! I did not. And I suffered from it! Totally my fault though!!! This place is still worth it!!
This stay was at least my fourth, the home is special, the setting, the ocean, pool, everything was perfect, I wish I could buy it!
Absolutely amazing! Every space was well thought out to enjoy the spectacular views. Can't say enough great things!
This property is amazing! I picked it because we wanted someplace special where we didn’t have to leave to enjoy the beauty of Hawaii. We scored and our visit with Dan was great. We will return to this paradise hopefully again and again!
Enjoyed our stay here in Milolii. The home has everything you need. Quaint neighborhood. The sound of waves crashing and ocean breezes were the best. We will definitely stay here again.
This was our second time at Rick’s Place and we were not disappointed. We stayed on the property 3 days and explored the island other days but made a point to be back to see the gorgeous sunsets. Dolphins came by almost every day, and we even saw a shark. Dan is an amazing host and easy to deal with. We really enjoyed connecting our iPhones and playing Spotify through his stereo system. Nothing better than listening to your favorite tunes while enjoying the incredible views from the patio deck. The outdoor shower is so relaxing. We look forward to coming back for another relaxing vacation.
Ricks Place was Incredible!! We had a Great time and if we were just to relax here that would have been fine! Very comfortable with everything you need except food and theirs 2 markets just 11 miles to the south! Only here 6 nights but could have stayed much longer! Loved the pool and outdoor shower and the chairs out front to view sunsets!! We saw whales - dolphins and turtles right out front!! Dan's a great guy and glad we met him and he help with what ever we wanted!! My wife and I always rate the places we visit and we both said Rick's place is A+!!! Hope to return soon! John & Jenny
Wow! The only critique of this place is that the pictures do not do it justice. Seeing the beautiful green roof as we came down the mountain was exciting. While the home is beautiful, the first moment that we walked out the back door, we were in awe of the ocean beating against the cliffs. We had a high surf warning, and enjoyed a front seat to the waves splashing against the volcanic rock on the patio. It was a wonderful welcome, and instantly put us in awe of the beauty of the area. This home is wonderfully located between Volcanoes National park and Kona. However, getting to Hilo was not an inconvenience. Being in the southern area of the island, it was easy to make both sides of the island very attainable. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would highly recommend visiting Volcano National Park, Richardson’s Ocean Park and Rainbow Falls in Hilo, the Green Sand Beach, Black Sand Beach, and spending a day enjoying Kona as well. We rented a boat from Kona boat rental, and enjoyed snorkeling at Captain Cook and taking in the ocean. Couldn’t have been a more enjoyable experience and true getaway!! Thank you, Dan, for opening your home, and providing hospitality along the way.
We have been coming to the Hawaiian Islands for the past 15+yrs, having stayed in Hotels and VRBO'S. Rick's Place only needs to be described with one word WOW!! It was such a beautiful place. We loved the pool, the decor, the outdoor shower, all of it!! Rick's Place had everything my husband needed to cook with, as well as extra towels, coolers, comfy bed etc... We saw a whale everyday, and a Dolphin, super excited about that.
Such a beautiful place, so hard to leave. We ended up not visiting other sites so we could continue watching the whales, dolphins, birds, waves, etc. and enjoying the well-stocked, open-air home. We had our wedding ceremony there on the cliff!!
Everything was perfect. All of our expectations were met or exceeded.
This property comes as advertised: beautiful and well-equipped. We absolutely loved it. Dan was very welcoming, easy to reach, and provided detailed instructions to assist with the trip out.
My wife and I really enjoyed your home Dan. The way you decorated, your home was just the way we would’ve decorated our VRBO. Anywhere we sat, we could watch the ocean, we enjoyed the whales the first day we got there. The secluded neighborhood was fun to walk through and talk to the neighbors. The house was in a perfect spot to visit the southern end of the island for the first time for us. The kitchen was well stocked with utensils, lots of towels and we sure enjoyed the geckos sneaking into our wine glasses. :-). Will always remember this trip! Thank you so much!
This is the perfect place to get away from it all. We had stayed in Miloli’I before, just down the street, so we knew to bring supplies with us, and that the location was a bit out of the way. Which is one of the reasons we chose to stay at Rick’s Place. Ok I did forget my hairbrush and it was quite an adventure to find one. This is one of the best equipped properties we have ever stayed in. The kitchen has everything you need. I cooked daily. The relaxation began the moment we arrived. The house was decorated (we arrived Dec 23rd) with a small tree, lights and we opened the door to Hawaiian Christmas music and in time for sunset. I can’t describe how relaxing it is just to sit on the lanai and stare at the ocean or sit in the pool and stare at the ocean, take a shower and stare at the ocean or lay in bed and stare at the ocean do yoga on the lanai and stare at the ocean. The house is magical. I brought a kindle but found it more enjoyable to just grab one of the many paper books. Whales arrived on Christmas night. We had daily visits from them, a highlight of the trip. There were a few days that we had plans but decided just to stay at the house. We were there for New Year’s Eve, we watched the fireworks from the lanai. We haven’t relaxed as much on a trip in years, if ever. I am a big question asker and Dan was great dealing with my many questions and was quick with all his response. I have already been looking at the availability so I can book a return trip.
