Enjoyed the space, quiet and outdoor space! Quiet and peaceful. Bed was really comfortable.
Excellent stay in the heart of Waimea, well situated near restaurants and shops. Greats views from all angles.
Cozy, quiet, convenient and well apointed!
We love staying here at Captain Jay's.. it's our second time! Waimea is beautiful and at a cooler elevation, which we enjoy. The space is well-equipped for cooking meals. There's a killer morning view of Mauna Kea out the front door. We like the proximity to town and centralized location. The farmers markets can't be beat! There's a few quirks with the shower's hot water & the steep driveway (AWD with clearance no prob though). The furniture could use an update soon, but still works ok. The pillows and linens are super comfy! This is a great place to relax and enjoy island life.
We had a great, peaceful stay. Mahalo to Jay for the easy communication and wonderful accommodations. A hui hou!
Jay is an excellent host, making our stay here seamless and comfortable. Captain’s Quarters immediately felt like our own eclectic quiet little getaway. Great value for space, we had everything we needed from cooking breakfast and prepping day trip meals to inspiration from wonderfully stocked bookshelves. The artwork and decor give this cottage personality above any hotel or cookie cutter Vrbo stay. Day trips all over the Big Island were easy from here; large food store nearby very convenient. We discovered a lovely nature trail just down the road that supported morning runs into town along a creek and rural backyards. The hills of this neighbourhood make for good cardio exercising! Our 4x4 Chevy Silverado pick-up truck climbed the steep narrow driveway no problem but proved a challenge to turn in the top area. Jay was very helpful in making sure we could get out safely and park our very long vehicle where it would fit. Some may find the bed a bit soft if they prefer a harder surface, but the ample space and excellent linen selection made this very adaptable for us. Consistent hot water requires a bit of patience and there is not really a two-person indoor table to eat at if the weather does not complement the lovely patio tables, but overall we were want for naught. We were so glad to have found this place to stay, and enjoyed our time in Waimea very much!
This was a beautiful little cottage. Nice deck. Conveniently located for my birding outings. The property owner was friendly, helpful, and conscientious. I would gladly stay here again.
Very nice place.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Captain's Quarters! The cottage was very beautifully set-up & so clean. We had lots of privacy. The outside deck area was nicely covered so we could sit outside even if there was a little rain. Situated close to our favorite beach, morning swims were no problem. We can't say enough about how much we loved our stay...our new island home away from home, can't wait to go back!
Waimea was the perfect 'jumping off spot" for our big island visit, and the Captain's Quarters Cottage was the perfect spot in Waimea. Clean, spacious, well-equipped, and with beautiful views and cooling breezes this is where we'd come back in a heartbeat.
Amazing place with a great view and everything you need for a great trip. Highly recommended.
Perfect location for us in a truly beautiful and cozy setting. The property is lovely and quiet. Great location to see all the island sites and close to shopping, food and brewery in Waimea. Perfect cool temperatures in the evening were a nice change from the hot beaches during the day. Just loved this place!!!!!! The host communicated quickly, and we never had any issues or problems. The only concern was the driveway which is very steep and took me a few tries to get the right speed and angle to climb. Overall- 5 stars!!!!!!
Everything I could have hoped it to be. Quiet, walking distance to downtown, beautiful scenery. Highly recommended. Jay is a wonderful host. Responded to emails. Even offered a later check out time, when my plane was delayed by a day.
Great host and location.
The perfect place to explore the beautiful Kohala Coast.
Jay's cottage is cozy and perfect for a couple for a quiet getaway. It is equipped with everything you could think of (and even things you didn't think of!). We would definitely stay there again if we are ever in Waimea in the future. Highly recommend!!!
Very nice place to stay. Great view of the mountains. Very close to town. Lots of privacy. No noise. Well stocked kitchen. You should have a vehicle that can go up a steep hill as the driveway is quite steep. Alternatively you can park on the road at the bottom which worked well for us. Overall an excellent place to stay. Very friendly couple who rent the cottage.
Everything you need in this apartment. Beautiful views of the volcanos. Centrally located to go to beaches or volcanoes. We would definitely stay again.
We typically stay close or on beach, however, wife was looking for less touristy and Waimea was the answer. Short drive to Kona or Hilo, definitely will stay here on next trip. Quite, Peaceful, Comfortable, Convenient, well equipped. Farmers Market Wednesday & Saturdays with produce, meat, fish, & baked goods.I should add this was my 10th trip to Big Island.
Like other reviews the driveway is a challenge until he told us the best way. The setting is really nice in the trees. We had gecko visitors inside the unit which was a surprise. Well equipped. Nice to have beach items for use. Good restaurant in the area.
We loved Jay’s place. It was a convenient launching pad for hike’s, beaches, restaurants in the area. It had everything we needed, was very clean, more than enough room for us, in a quiet neighborhood, and lots of good books if you are a reader. It was home away from home for us. Thank you Jay.
This place has a great location in Waimea from which to drive to places on the Big Island. It is a real quiet place. And it has a great view.
This property is fantastic for 2 people. The bed is huge. The kitchen is well equipped and the deck is perfect for sitting and having coffee and looking at those views. It's clean and the owner. J is very easy to work with.
Our seven-night stay at Captain's Quarters Cottage on Nob Hill in Waimea was absolutely idyllic. From the moment we arrived, we were struck by the breathtaking views. Stepping out onto the little deck, Mauna Kea stood majestically in front of us, and from the rear pa, we could see the Kohala coastline stretching out towards the ocean. It was truly a sight to behold, especially during the sunrise. The cottage itself was immaculate. I mean, truly spotless. It felt like we were the first guests to ever stay there. Everything was so clean and well-maintained. The kitchen was surprisingly well-equipped; we cooked several meals, and found everything we needed right at our fingertips. The king-size bed was incredibly comfortable, ensuring we had restful nights, which were wonderfully cool thanks to the Waimea climate. We barely needed to use the provided extra blankets.Speaking of the climate, it was perfect. The cool, crisp air was a welcome change from the heat we'd experienced elsewhere on the island. We loved opening the windows and letting the fresh breezes flow through the cottage. The quiet and peaceful atmosphere was exactly what we were looking for. We read, relaxed, and simply enjoyed the tranquility. We did take note of the steep driveway, as mentioned in other reviews. Our SUV handled it fine, just take it slow and steady, and you'll be fine. The location was incredibly convenient, just a short drive into to many beaches and sights.
We had a wonderful two-week stay at this quiet, private cottage in Waimea. Set on a hill behind the main house, it offers stunning views—Mauna Kea from the front door and the ocean from the other side. The cottage is simple but comfortable, with a well-equipped kitchen, a comfy king size bed, a full bath, and a great library of books. It’s a peaceful retreat while still being close to town. If you’re looking for a relaxing stay with beautiful scenery, this is a great choice.
I stayed here solo in Jan '25 for four nights and loved it. A beautiful view of the sunrise over Maunakea, a nice walk into town, a quiet neighborhood, and close proximity to many outdoors adventures (as a cyclist and trailroad runner).
Nicely and completely appointed loft/studio. I slept very well during the refreshingly cool nights. Enjoyed the fully functional kitchen with the two electric burners for eggs in the morning.
My stay was pleasant. I only spoke to Jay once and he was nice to talk with. The driveway is a little bit steep and there was plenty of space to park.
We stayed three nights. Would come back again and stay longer!
We loved our time here. It was an extremely private and quiet place to stay. The morning Mauna Kea sunrise views were pretty awesome out the front door. The full kitchen was great for storage and cooking. And the king size bed was very comfy! FYI: You must be able to walk up the stairs to the entrance. And yes, the driveway is very steep. Even our AWD vehicle would spin the wheels a bit each time going up, and there was a slight scrape to the front of the car coming down. It's doable for sure, but just something to be aware of. The place is really well equipped, just could've used a fan. But there's usually wind and it cools down at night. We will definitely book here again in the future! Thank you for sharing your space with us!
This cottage comes well-equipped for a comfortable stay: a well-stocked kitchen, extra linens and pillows, a king bed, and many interesting books to choose from their library. The neighborhood is charming, town is right down the hill for shopping and eating out. If you are a timid driver, the steep and narrow driveway might intimidate you. It’s worth braving it to stay here!
Grateful that we stayed at this cottage; it felt like home and a different experience than a resort hotel stay. Our favorite was being able to.sit on the balcony and enjoy the cool breeze, sunsets, and starry nights.
Captain’sQuarters is a great place to stay and it served us well. We were able to cook meals and enjoy takeout from the fabulous Pau Pizza and Taco Rosa. Every day we headed out from Waimea, it being a central location that facilitated trips to Hilo, Hawi and all the beaches on the Kohala shore. Do have some warmer clothes for Waimea as it is cooler and can be windy. Jay takes good care of the place, though it is a little aged, and he is friendly, organized and helpful.
Check in was super easy and we were immediately Surprised & Delighted by our first beautiful sunset upon arrival. Our hosts were attentive and had provided everything we needed for a night in or a day at the beach. The location was excellent considering that we were celebrating a birthday at Merrimans - just 3 minutes away. We would stay here again for sure!
This is a beautiful loft cottage with all the amenities The driveway is a real challenge, and the shower taps are tricky. Overall it’s a great space and we would recommend it highly!
Our experience was good. The hosts were very nice. Perfect for couples and newly weds!
We enjoyed the views, the artwork in the cottage and the tranquility. It was a great home base for exploring the beauty of the Kohala area.
Jay's place was such a haven. It was quiet and well-appointed, and had spectacular views up the coast toward Kona and behind the house looking back at Mauna Kea. Would absolutely recommend.
I can't do the fabulous quality of the light in this sweet spot justice. But should you find yourself here, you'll see for yourself--whether looking out on the sloping landscape to the Pacific and the beaches north of Kona or to (monumental!) Mauna Kea. As equally lovely was Jay's helpfulness in assisting you with whatever you might need, provision of all amenities in this just-right-amount-of-space place situated in Waimea with its pretty perfect weather! Maybe more accurately you could classify it as perfectly variable, with mistings interspersed with brilliant sunshine, which was exactly what a (too) hot-of-a-summer-weather escapee was looking for. SUPERLATIVE short-term rental in every way!
Fantastic location in Waimea! Perfect place for a couple. We already have another reservation for the Captain’s Quarters Cottage and are really looking forward to our stay.
If you want glitz and glam, no. If you want a peaceful idyllic cozy place with a fantastic patio to enjoy a read or a meal on, book it! It’s centrally located to the town of Waimea and 250 which takes you up and over Kohala and the stunning north side of the Big Island.
This is a little hidden gem! Great location in Waimea and stunning views!! This little cottage is very quaint and comfortable! The owner is on site and is very good at communicating about the property. We would definitely stay there again!
All good. Nice to see Jay and Diane.
This was a great cottage tucked away in the Waimea hill sides. Quiet friendly neighborhood I would definitely stay again.
We stayed here for two nights at the beginning of a 2 week vacation over on Kauai. The property is well maintained and very clean. There are awesome views from the deck and from inside. We were very pleased with this property and the location. Having been to the Big Island a few other times, we have always loved Waimea and have talked about staying here - we're glad we chose this particular property! The location is perfect, allowing for a quick drive to town, a scenic drive to Hawi on Kohala Mountain Road or a 20 minute drive down to Hapuna Beach.
My stay here was just perfect. I was able to get in a lot of quiet time, which is what I wanted, but town was only a 4 minute drive away, the beach only 20! It was the best of both worlds. The place was clean, the views beautiful, and the owner was super nice. Some of you will read about the driveway and it's steepness. Don't let it intimidate you! It's easy to manage (and I'm a city driver from the flat lands!) but I do recommend a car or jeep with some road clearance to avoid any issues. I can wholeheartedly recommend this place to anyone looking for a quiet get away!
We spent 2 beautiful nights in this hilltop cottage that revealed commanding views of Mauna Kea and the ocean. Inside was equally spectacular with unique architecture, lovely artwork, wonderful shelves with great books, well-stocked kitchen, comfy bed and a nice deck for dining. Very clean with lots of attention to details that made our stay enjoyable. Mahalo!
Nice quiet place to stay.
We stayed for 8 nights while visiting family here. This rental is perfect for (2) people and has everything you need. Communication with Jay was great. The unit was very clean and cozy. Sitting outside on the deck was very enjoyable with the great view and bird watching. A table for two inside would be a nice option in case of bad weather. The steps leading up to the door might be a concern if you have mobility issues. The driveway (as many have mentioned) is steep. A SUV would be a good choice if available. We had no issues while there. We will return to Waimea again and stay here if available as this unit and Jay accommodated all our needs.
We stayed in this property for 15 days and it was one of the best places we’ve stayed in during a vacation. The view is amazing and the place feels very cozy and homey. We will definitely stay here again in the future and we highly recommend it for people who like private settings.
The cabin was in a great location and was beautifully decorated. We loved sitting out on the deck in the morning, having our coffee, birdwatching, and enjoying the view.
Great location and well kept home.
Very clean and well organized.
This property is upcountry, in Kamuela. It was very breezy and peaceful. This studio loft was very comfortable. Leaving the doors open on either side made it perfect for a good nights rest. It felt as though we were sleeping in a cozy treehouse. Nature all around and wonderful views from high up in the trees. My Husband and I found it a respite from hectic day to day life, and it felt private and secluded. We enjoyed the use of the kitchenette and had several meals together there. I would welcome the thought of visiting there again. We were truly sorry to leave.
Very peaceful, private and quiet. Jay was accessible for all our needs. While simultaneously, invisible, allowing the feeling of home.
Excellent place on Waimea, very quiet, private and super clean. The house is on a mountain and it has great view of the Mauna Kea volcano and the Pacific shore. Air is cooler than at the beach side which makes a great bonus. The location is very close to the shore the drive is about 15 minutes to the closest beach. The host is wonderful to talk to, he very kindly let us do a late checkout. The driveway is easy to drive up to the house by anyone, even beginner drivers, just when you enter the driveway (or when you exit it) enter at an angle, doing so only one wheel starts to go up and the car will easily and smoothly transition to the grade of the driveway. So turn the car slightly before you reach the driveway. Do not do a large turn on the street and enter the driveway strait in with both front wheels at the same time. We had a hatchback (Kia soul) and never had an issue going up or down many times a day for a week. Thank you!
This was a lovely home, well-designed and full of creative and beautiful details! Communication was clear, house rules were based on common-sense courtesy, and we enjoyed ourselves. We would definitely book this place again. The driveway is steep, which was daunting the first time, but it makes sense for the location. We had enough parking and turn around space at the top which was helpful.
The location was very beautiful and I would love to give this place a 5 star review but the driveway needs to be addressed. This driveway is steeper than implied. It’s almost vertical and saying an “average driver” can navigate it doesn’t ring true. You need exceptional clearance to not bottom out. Returned the convertible for an SUV and still scraped. I Lived on a farm, I know how to drive, this driveway needs a Jeep or lifted truck. Also lots Geckos poop from resident indoor Geckos, but they are cute enough.
I always like to stay in or near Waimea when I come to the big island and this little cottage was perfect: peaceful, private, comfortable and full of books and pretty things to look at. Would definitely book again. Thank you!
