Hamoa Beach

Hamoa Beach is a crescent-shaped Hana beach with salt-and-pepper sand, clear-water days, bodyboarding waves, no lifeguards and lush east Maui scenery.

Hamoa Beach, Maui

Hamoa Beach, located south of the small town of Hana, made an impression on James Michener, author of the novel Hawaii. Michener called Hamoa Beach the most beautiful beach in the Pacific, and it is easy to see why this crescent shoreline has stayed so well known. The salt-and-pepper sand beach is backed by 30-foot (9 m) sea cliffs and lush vegetation, creating a dramatic contrast with the blue Pacific.

Hamoa Beach is one of several pocket beaches in this area. It offers good swimming and bodysurfing conditions when the surf is not too high. Since the beach is not protected by an offshore reef, the surf can get high and currents can be strong. This is when it is best to stay out of the water. The ocean is usually calmest during the summer and early fall. Surfing may also be possible when conditions are suitable.

No lifeguards are stationed here, but you'll find restrooms and showers. The Hana-Maui Resort is located nearby.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Hamoa Beach so well known?

Hamoa has long been praised for its crescent shape, green cliff backdrop and salt-and-pepper sand. Author James Michener famously admired the beach, helping give it a lasting reputation among Hana-area beaches.

What does salt-and-pepper sand mean at Hamoa Beach?

The sand is a mix of lighter grains and darker volcanic material, giving it a speckled look. That mix is part of what makes Hamoa look different from many golden-sand beaches on Maui.

Are there lifeguards at Hamoa Beach?

No. Hamoa Beach does not have lifeguards, so ocean conditions need a careful look before entering. Shorebreak, current and waves can be stronger than they first appear.

How do you get down to Hamoa Beach?

Access is from the roadside above the beach, using stairs or a steep paved path down to the sand. Parking is limited, so avoid blocking driveways, gates or the narrow road.

Is Hamoa Beach part of a Road to Hana day?

Yes, many visitors include Hamoa after reaching Hana or staying nearby. Because it is past Hana town, allow enough daylight for the drive, parking and the walk down to the beach.
